The following are guidelines that students should follow as they start applying to colleges. Counselors meet with all students during the spring of their junior year to explain how to conduct college searches and what they should be doing in order to prepare. Students are encouraged to make individual appointments with their counselors at any time to discuss colleges.
College Application Procedures
College List
-
Make an organized list of schools you plan to apply to with the school’s deadlines. This list should consist of safety, moderate, and reach schools. The number of schools you apply to is both a personal and family decision.
Transcript Requests
-
Students should submit their application before the counselors send out transcripts or letters of recommendation. Once the application is submitted, please come down and alert your counselor to send out transcripts and letters of recommendation.
-
Remember that it takes TWO WEEKS to process your request for transcripts. See your counselor two weeks prior to the deadline to ensure the college receives the transcripts and letters of recommendations on time.
-
Letters of Recommendation
-
Students should check the college's websites to see how many letters of recommendation the school requires (typically two letters). Students should ask a teacher and/or counselor in person first. Next they should provide the counselor or teacher with a brag sheet to help them write a strong letter of recommendation. All Common App schools require a letter of recommendation from a teacher AND a counselor.
**Please note that 2 yr schools as well as Rutgers University do not require a letter of recommendation**
Sending SAT and/or ACT Scores
-
Students are responsible for sending SAT/ACT scores via www.collegeboard.org or www.actstudent.org. SAT and/or ACT scores should be sent directly to schools you are applying to as soon as they come in. Please know that scores can be sent after the application is submitted but your application will not be considered complete until scores have arrived.
Process for Rutgers University
-
Complete application at admissions.rutgers.edu (They will ask for a NJ State ID Number - your counselor can provide this for you).
-
Once your application is complete, you will fill out the SRAR (Self Reported Academic Record) where you will enter all of your classes and grades. See your counselor for a copy of your final grades if needed.
-
Send SAT/ACT scores
***It is important to note that Rutgers does not accept transcripts or recommendation letters.
Common App
-
Many schools use the Common Application where students complete one application at commonapp.org and are able to send it to multiple schools. Through the Common App, students can request transcrips and letters of recommendation by providing counselor and teacher email addresses. The school's admissions website will say whether or not they use this service or not.
Fee Wavers
-
If you used a College Board fee waver for the SAT, we can provide you with four college application fee wavers. Please notify your counselor which four schools you would like the wavers to be sent to.
